Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge

Port Angeles, Washington

Wildlife of Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge

Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge is located on Washington's Olympic Penninsula on the shoreline of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The Refuge was established by Executive Order on January 20, 1915, as a resting and wintering area for migratory birds.

Wildlife watching in recent years has become an important outdoor recreation activity and can provide many hours of enjoyment in a natural environment. A good pair of binoculars or spotting scope will help you observe wildlife from a distance. By using equipment such as this you can observe the species in detail without disturbing it in its natural habitat.

Birds

Over 250 species of birds have been recorded at Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge. The best time to see birds is during the fall and spring migrations, especially in the early morning or late evening. Shorebirds are best seen at low tide. Different kinds of birds may be seen at different times of the year.

                                                         Peak
Category Months Populations

Marsh & Waterbirds Oct.-Jan. 1,000
Waterfowl Oct.-Jan. 26,000
Birds of Prey June-Oct. 20
Shorebirds April-Sept. 15,000
Perching birds April-Sept. unknown
When looking at a bird pay close attention to characteristics such as color, size, shape, wing and head markings. Always observe first and then refer to your identification book because the bird may not remain where it can be readily observed for a long period of time. This is especially true of perching birds. Remember - practice makes perfect!
