Field Checklist of the Birds of Douglas County

Roseburg, Oregon

Douglas County is the fifth largest county in Oregon and the biggest west of the Cascades. Its 5,089 square miles, extending from 9,182 foot Mt. Thielsen in the Cascades to sea level at the Pacific Ocean, provide many diverse habitats. Within its boundaries lie the complete watershed of the Umpqua River, two large lakes and numerous water impoundments, ponds, and bogs. It contains 1/20th of the nation's old growth timber reserve and thousands of acres devoted to field crops, orchard, and pasture lands.

Yet, until recently, Douglas County has been mostly ignored by serious birders.

This list contains 319 species, including 50 accidentals. It has taken three years to compile, using field notes and records kept by the local Audubon Society from field trips; from field notes loaned by visiting birders; from field records kept by wildlife biologists from the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife; and from ten years of personal records kept by Fred & Alice Parker of Roseburg.
