The Channeled Scablands of Eastern Washington

small state map showing location

Spokane, Washington

SEASONAL OCCURRENCE STATUS

M   (Migrant) Nonbreeder-present only during the migrations between wintering and breeding ranges
P   (Permanent) Sedentary breeder-present year round as individuals
PSP   (Permanent Species) Non sedentary breeder present year round as a species
SB   (Summer Breeder) Breeder present only during the summer season
W   (Wintering) Nonbreeder, species present only during the winter season
WV   (Winter Visitor) Nonbreeder, individuals occurring generally in winter
SV   (Summer Visitor) Individuals occurring generally in summer. Breeding not verified.

The reader will notice that some species are listed with two occurrence ratings. Some species consist of individuals that breed in the region and of others who are only passing through. The Hammond's Flycatcher, for one, is a rare SB in the scablands, but it is a common M.

The authors felt that this distinction was important in some species and that a double listing was the cleanest way to express it.

ABUNDANCE STATUS

C   (Common) Numerous to very numerous in appropriate habitat and season
U   (Uncommon) Present in low numbers
R   (Rare) Not always present or widely spaced
XR   (Extremely Rare) Very seldom present
REC   (Record) Birds that have been recorded in the area six times or less at the time of publication

Abundance of birds fluctuate according to the factors that affect their welfare. Habitat disruption and climatic cycles have the greatest impact. The same impact can affect different species in opposite ways. Irrigation projects are beneficial to egrets and pelicans but detrimental to Sage Thrashers and steppe Sparrows. For example a hot continuous drought will decrease the occurrence of shorebirds but will increase the chances for Black-throated Sparrows to reach the scablands.

Abundance status code is intended to reflect the estimated species populations. Chances for observation cannot be easily codified. It will be dependent on the current conditions, the weather and the alertness of the observer.
