Camas National Wildlife Refuge

Hamer, Idaho

Camas National Wildlife Refuge is located in southeast Idaho about 36 miles north of Idaho Falls near the small town of Hamer. The refuge was established in 1937 and is administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Department of the Interior. The refuge is a part of the National Wildlife Refuge System and is an important link in the chain of refuges along the Pacific Flyway.

The primary objectives of the refuge are to provide resting and feeding habitat for migratory birds and nesting habitat for waterfowl.

The refuge encompasses 10,578 acres, about half of which is wetlands and the remainder mostly rangelands. Camas Creek flows through the refuge and provides water for the refuge during spring. A number of deep wells have been drilled to provide water during summer and fall.

Birding is good all year but access may be limited in winter.

The refuge is readily accessible from Interstate 15. Take the Hamer exit and proceed north for three miles on the old highway then west on a paved county road to Refuge Headquarters.

The following list of 177 species is the result of observations made by refuge personnel and visiting birdwatchers. Common names used are in accordance with the "American Ornithologists' Union Check-list of North American Birds", 6th edition (1983).
