Bird Checklists of the United States

Boise District

Boise, Idaho

From the windswept peaks of the Silver City Range to the deep canyons of the Jarbidge, Bruneau and Owyhee Rivers, and across the parched deserts of the Snake River Plain wild birds abound in the Bureau of Land Management's Boise District. The rich variety of habitat offered on these public lands in southwest Idaho are home to about 310 species of wild birds for a few months each year.

Boise District encompasses nearly six million acres of land with elevations ranging from 1,650 to 8,400 feet and annual precipitation varying from 7 to 50 inches. The District's geographic area covers two degrees longitude and over three degrees latitude. The region's main waterway, the Snake River, crosses the Boise District from east to west before veering north to form the District's western border.

Many different types of song birds use the Snake River as a major spring migration corridor. The usually mild winter climate along the Snake River allows some species, such as the loggerhead shrike, to winter farther north than they do in surrounding states. When they do finally flee the cool weather, many of the summer song birds of Idaho live south of the United States for several months. These birds are called neotropical migrants.

Unfortunately, populations of many species of neotropical migrants are declining throughout North America. Changes to native habitats in the United States and in tropical countries where these birds winter have put them at risk.

In the Boise District, human settlement and activity has changed the abundance, distribution, and seasonal occupancy of native birds. Urbanization, farming, damming waterways, diverting water, logging, mining, exotic plant and animal introductions, livestock grazing, road building, and bird feeding have all affected the life patterns of the wild birds.

Consider, for example, how the development of reservoirs in the District has affected bird life. Birds that use riparian habitat and marshes are displaced when the area is flooded to create a reservoir. Yet, the reservoirs provide large feeding areas for aquatic birds and even allow some to winter, such as doublecrested cormorants and Forster's terns. Reservoirs also provide a refuge for waterfowl during hunting season. And, although reservoir draw-downs strand some nesting waterfowl, the mud bars created by the draw-down are used by shorebirds as feeding areas.

Logging and agriculture have also modified habitats and altered bird distributions. The barred owl, for instance, native to the central and eastern United States, has expanded its range west as forests have been converted to open woodlands. The barred owl now nests in northern parts of the Boise District.

These activities combine to change or fragment wild bird habitat that allows nest parasites and predators to find nests and destroy eggs and young. Feeding and loafing habitat on nesting and wintering grounds are also reduced.

Considering the effects of human activities on the inhabitants of public land, the Boise District is committed to protect native plants and animals and to restore damaged habitat to ensure that the wild birds have a healthy summer home.

This checklist has been compiled by Bureau of Land Management's Boise District biologists, with assistance from the Raptor Research and Technical Assistance Center and the Golden Eagle Audubon Society.

Unusual bird sightings should be reported to the Boise District Partners in Flight coordinator. These efforts contribute to the international conservation objectives of Partners in Flight, which was formed to reverse the decline in wild bird populations.
