Breeding Birds of North Dakota

White-winged crossbill (Loxia leucoptera (Gmelin))

Breeding Range. Hypothetical. Unsubstantiated records of nesting at Jamestown in Stutsman County were reported by Mrs. Dana Wright in 1894 and for several years thereafter (Wood 1923). Other records of adults during the breeding season also suggest the possibility of breeding status in eastern North Dakota. These records are listed as follows:

Late July, 1895--A small flock, probably a family, was recorded in the Cando area of Towner County (Judd 1917).
July 23, 1905--A specimen was collected from a small flock at Grafton in Walsh County (Williams 1926).
June 27, 1953--A male was observed at Fargo (J. F. Cassel).
June 28-July 6, 1953--One at Leeds in Benson County on June 28, 1953, and recorded 7 miles west of Leeds on July 6, 1953 (A. C. Fox).
August 13, 1962--One found dead at Hatton in Traill County (Mrs. E. Evenson).
1963 (at Fargo)--One on July 14 (E. G. Anderson); two on July 23 (P. K. Hunter); and two on August 2 (V. J. Scheel).
1965 (at Fargo)--One on July 15 (R. Shook); pair on July 21 in spruce trees (W. A. Buresh).
August 9, 1969--One at Fargo (E. G. Anderson).
