Breeding Range. At Grand Forks, Russell L. Rytter recorded three pairs nesting and feeding young in 1971, and he observed a pair building a nest in 1972.
Several records in the Turtle Mountains suggest probable breeding status. In 1873, small numbers were observed there during the latter half of July, and a female was collected on July 28 (Coues 1878). Judd (1917) reported that this species breeds in the Turtle Mountains and is tolerably common there. At Lake Metigoshe in Bottineau County, Paul F. Springer recorded a singing male on August 1, 1966, and five singing males and one female on June 25, 1971. During the summer months of recent years (up to 1972), large numbers were apparently nesting in a woods about 2 miles west of Lake Metigoshe (O. Magnuson).
In 1972, this species was recorded at Fargo on June 12, July 25, July 26, and August 2 (E. G. Anderson).
