Breeding Range. Rare, local, and irregular. At Fargo, Elizabeth G. Anderson observed a pair apparently cleaning out a nesting hole on March 31, 1973, and on April 13, 1973 a male was still engaged in this activity. Observations of adults during the breeding season at Fargo were also recorded by Mrs. Anderson on June 30, 1963 (1 bird) and on June 26, 1968 (2 birds). On June 21, 1967, a singing male was recorded in the ponderosa pine forest of Slope County about 12 miles northwest of Amidon, and a male was collected in this area on July 19, 1967 (Kroodsma and Cassel 1968). During June 19-July 17, 1916, this species was recorded in the woods bordering East Sweetwater Lake in Ramsey County (F. M. Bailey). red-breasted nuthatch
