Breeding Birds of North Dakota

Barred owl (Strix varia (Barton))

Breeding Range. Definite records of nests or dependent young are lacking. However, there is little doubt that the species does breed in the state, particularly in the rich, wooded bottomland along the Sheyenne River in northwestern Richland County and northeastern Ransom County. Adults have been recorded repeatedly in this area during the breeding season, and the habitat is of a type that is commonly occupied in the midwestern and eastern states. Other records that suggest possible local breeding status elsewhere are listed as follows:

June 1873--Recorded at Fort Rice in Morton County (Allen 1874).

July 20-August 8, 1915--One recorded in wooded bottomland along Mouse River at Towner in McHenry County (R. Kellogg).

May 29-July 12, 1974--Recorded in wooded bottomland along the Tongue River, near Cavalier in Pembina County (D. L. Kubischta).
