Breeding Birds of North Dakota

Rock dove (Columba livia (Gmelin))

Breeding Range. Feral populations of this introduced species occur locally in western North Dakota. On June 8, 1970, a breeding colony was found in a narrow, steep-walled canyon at Chalky Butte in Slope County (RES). Scattered observations of adults during the breeding season also have been reported from the badlands along the Little Missouri River and in the strip-mining area near Beulah in Mercer County. In addition, semi-wild populations occur throughout the state in the vicinity of barns, sheds, and grain elevators of farmsteads, towns, and cities.
