Breeding Range. Hypothetical. The possibility that this species may breed in eastern North Dakota is suggested by the following records:
Bathgate, Pembina County--Breeding reported (A. Eastgate).

Larimore, Grand Forks County--Breeding reported (field notes file, U. S. Burl Biol. Survey).

Antler Creek, Bottineau County--A pair observed in April 1923 by Mr. G. A. Withey (Pettingill 1936).

American woodcock

Geneseo, Sargent County--One flushed near the Wild Rice River on July 24, 1957 (E. A. Hibbard).

Anselm, Ransom County--One flushed in a shrub swamp near the Sheyenne River on July 15, 1969 (RES).

Jamestown, Stutsman County--A singing male, apparently on breeding territory, was repeatedly observed during the period April 29-May 4, 1971, inclusive, but disappeared the following day; in 1972 on the same area, a singing male, apparently on territory, was repeatedly observed from April 24 to April 29, inclusive, but was not observed thereafter (RES).

Sully's Hill National Game Preserve, Benson County--One was flushed from wet brush on July 27, 1972 (D. E. Goeke).
