Breeding Birds of North Dakota

Western tanager (Piranga ludoviciana (Wilson))

Breeding Range. Hypothetical. The possibility of breeding status is suggested by the following record: On June 30, 1967 an adult male was observed in the ponderosa pine forest of Slope County, near the Burning Coal Vein (W. A. Buresh and J. F. Cassel). In many western states, ponderosa pine stands are occupied by breeding populations of this species. A singing male, possibly a vagrant, also was recorded on June 23, 1967 along the Heart River in western Stark County (R. L. Kroodsma).
