Least tern (Sterna albifrons (Pallas))


Breeding Range. (Fig. 77). Scattered breeding pairs or small groups of pairs are of regular occurrence on the stretch of the Missouri River that extends along the boundary between Burleigh and Morton Counties (R. N. Randall). Occasional pairs also have been recorded along the Missouri River within Emmons County (RES) and at Long Lake in Kidder County (B. J. Rose). Usually, these birds are found in the vicinity of exposed sand bars.

A nest with eggs was observed on a sand bar of the Missouri River near Bismarck on July 21, 1956; and during July 2-4, 1972, five nests with eggs were recorded in this area (R. N. Randall).
