Breeding Range. (Fig. 146). Fairly common in valleys and ravines along the Missouri River and tributaries below Garrison Dam, along the Missouri River and tributaries above the mouth of Little Missouri River, and along the Little Missouri River and tributaries extending upstream to southwestern Slope County; uncommon and local in coulees along valleys of the Mouse and Des Lacs rivers (within McHenry, Ward, and Renville Counties), and along the valley of the Missouri River between Garrison Dam and the mouth of the Little Missouri River.
Breeding Habitat. Fairly dense thickets of small trees and tall shrubs that are located in moist situations of valleys or ravines or on east- or north-facing slopes. Dominant species in these habitats include choke cherry, wild plum, hawthorn, Saskatoon serviceberry, bullberry, and western rose.
Nesting. Probable breeding season: Early May to early August. On July 28, 1913, an adult was observed feeding large young at Fort Clark in Oliver County (S. G. Jewett).
