Breeding Range. (Fig. 142). Common in the wooded valley along the Missouri River below Garrison Dam (extending downstream to a point about 10 miles below Bismarck and including adjoining portions of tributary valleys), on the Killdeer Mountains, and on uplands and bottomland along the lower portion of the Little Missouri River (within Dunn and McKenzie Counties); fairly common in the Turtle Mountains, and in the wooded valley along the lower Sheyenne River (within Cass, Richland, and Ransom Counties and in southern Barnes County); uncommon in the Pembina Hills of Cavalier County, on the deltaic sand area of western Pembina County, in wooded valleys along the Mouse and Des Lacs rivers (within McHenry and Ward Counties), in the badlands along the upper portion of the Little Missouri River (within Billings County and north-central Slope County) and along the upper stretch of the Missouri River and adjoining tributaries (above mouth of Little Missouri River); rare and local elsewhere--recorded along the James River in southeastern Stutsman County, in wooded hills near south shore of Devils Lake, along the Sheyenne River near Valley City, and along the Knife River in Mercer County.
Breeding Habitat. Various types of mature upland or well-drained bottomland deciduous forests. These include forest stands on bluffs and well-drained floodplains of river valleys and on slopes and ravines of prominent hills or escarpments. Associations of dominant trees in these stands vary according to geographical locations and include such species as basswood, quaking aspen, paper birch, American elm, green ash, bur oak, and cottonwood.
Nesting. On July 1, 1913, a nest containing three fresh eggs was found at Oakdale in the Killdeer Mountains of Dunn County (Gabrielson and Jewett 1924). During the summer of 1967, Roger L. Kroodsma found a nest containing one Ovenbird egg and three Brown-headed Cowbird eggs along the Mouse River in McHenry County. During 1967-1969, three active nests were found in the Turtle Mountains by Calvin Cink.
