Yellow warbler (Dendroica petechia (Linnaeus))

Breeding Range. (Fig. 139). Common in the Turtle Mountains, in the Pembina Hills, in the wooded deltaic sand area of western Pembina County, in the wooded hills and lake shores in the Devils Lake area (southern Ramsey County and eastern Benson County), in wooded valleys along the Red River and its tributaries (including stretch of Sheyenne River extending upstream to north-central Eddy County), along the James River (within Dickey, LaMoure, and Stutsman Counties), along the Mouse and Des Lacs rivers (within McHenry, Ward, and Renville Counties), along the Missouri River and major tributaries below Garrison Dam, along the Missouri River and major tributaries above mouth of Little Missouri River, and along the Little Missouri River (extending upstream to northwestern Bowman County); fairly common locally elsewhere throughout the state.

Breeding Habitat. Fairly dense thickets of small deciduous trees and tall shrubs that occur on moist or swampy sites; also of regular occurrence in shelterbelts and in partially wooded habitation areas of towns and farmsteads.

Nesting. Breeding season: Late May to late July; peak, early June to early July. Nest-building was noted as early as May 29 [1970] in Stutsman County (P. F. Springer). Extreme egg dates (18 nests): June 2 [1963] in Stutsman County (RES) to June 30 [1915] in Grand Forks County (R. Kellogg). Three records of dependent young out of the nest were recorded from July 6 [1916] in Ramsey County (F. M. Bailey) to July 29 [1913] in Oliver County (S. G. Jewett).

Nesting sites were recorded for nine nests. Of these, two were situated in wolfberry, two in hawthorn, and one each in willow, bur oak, silverberry, sprouts of box elder, and hazelnut. The height above the ground for four nests ranged from 2 1/2 to 7 1/2 feet.

Indicated clutch size (12 nests): 2 to 5 eggs; mean, 3.6 eggs.
