Breeding Range. (Fig. 163). Fairly common in the Turtle Mountains, in the Pembina Hills, in the wooded deltaic sand area of western Pembina County, in wooded stream valleys throughout the Agassiz Lake Plain, along the wooded valley of the Sheyenne River (extending upstream to north-central Eddy County), in the wooded hills and lake shores of the Devils Lake area (southeastern Benson County and southern Ramsey County), in the wooded valley along the James River (between Jamestown and Grand Rapids), and in wooded ravines of the Prairie Coteau hills of southeastern Sargent County; uncommon in the wooded valleys along the Mouse and Des Lacs rivers (within Renville, Ward, and McHenry Counties), and along Antler Creek in northwestern Bottineau County; rare and local elsewhere--summer records from southern Towner County, southeastern Rolette County, along Beaver Creek in Emmons County, along the Missouri River near Bismarck, along the Knife River in Mercer County, and along the Little Missouri River in Billings County.
Breeding specimens that have been collected in North Dakota include hybrids (P. ludovicianus x P. melanocephalus) taken near East Devils Lake (West 1962) and along the Mouse River in McHenry County and Beaver Creek near Linton (Kroodsma 1974b).
Breeding Habitat. Semiopen, mesophytic, deciduous forests that occur on slopes of prominent hills, escarpments, and valley bluffs, and on well-drained floodplains of large streams. Prominent tree species in these habitats include American elm, green ash, bur oak, box elder, and quaking aspen; in eastern North Dakota, basswood and hop-hornbeam are common associates.
