Breeding Birds of North Dakota

Chipping sparrow (Spizella passerina (Bechstein))

Breeding Range. (Fig. 177). Locally common on the Little Missouri Slope (most numerous in the badlands along the Little Missouri River and Missouri River); fairly common in the Agassiz Lake Plain Region and in the Turtle Mountains; fairly common locally on the Southern Drift Plain (most numerous along the Sheyenne River valley within northwestern Ransom County, Barnes County, and Griggs County and along the James River valley between Jamestown and LaMoure) on the Northwestern Drift Plain (most numerous along the Mouse River valley within McHenry, Ward, and Renville Counties), and on the Coteau Slope and Missouri Slope (most numerous along valleys of the Missouri River and its tributaries); uncommon on the Northeastern Drift Plain; rare and local on the Missouri Coteau--recorded in Kidder, Logan, and Wells Counties.

Breeding Habitat. In the badlands along the Little Missouri River, this species occurs commonly in the scattered open stands of Rocky Mountain cedar, ponderosa pine, and various deciduous trees including green ash and bur oak. Elsewhere in the state, Chipping Sparrows are of regular occurrence along margins of deciduous woodlands that occur along some of the higher hills and escarpments and along slopes and bottomlands of stream valleys and lake borders. Other habitats that are occupied include partially wooded lawns, parks, and landscaped areas of towns, suburbs, and farmsteads.

Nesting. Probable breeding season: Mid-May to late August; peak, early June to early August. Nest-building was recorded on May 17 [1973] at Jamestown (A. T. Klett). Extreme egg dates (4 nests): May 25 [1973] in LaMoure County (M. L. Avery) to June 20 [1962--4 slightly incubated eggs] in Slope County (RES). Dependent young out of the nest were recorded on July 27 [1960] and August 24 [1963] in Stutsman County (RES).

Nests are placed in shrubs or small trees, usually within a few feet from the ground.
