Breeding Range. (Fig. 183). Uncommon in the Turtle Mountains; rare in the Pembina Hills. During June 17-22, 1912, Vernon Bailey counted 18 singing males along roads in the Turtle Mountains of Rolette County (about one singing male to a mile of woods). Apparently, breeding populations have been largely limited to widely scattered pairs during recent years. However, during 1967-1969, six breeding pairs were found to occupy the North Dakota portion of the International Peace Garden in Rolette County (C. Cink).
Breeding Habitat. Mature stands of quaking aspen with a fairly dense understory of beaked hazelnut and associated shrubs; also occurs along willow-bordered marshes (V. Bailey) and in the vicinity of planted groves of spruce on the International Peace Garden (C. Cink).
Nesting. On June 13, 1895, a nest containing 5 eggs was collected in the Turtle Mountains within Rolette County; the nest was situated on the ground in thick undergrowth of shrubs (L. B. Bishop).
