Breeding Range. (Fig. 160). Common in the Turtle Mountains, Pembina Hills, Devils Lake hills, and in wooded stream valleys along the Red River and its tributaries, James River, Mouse River and its tributaries, and Missouri River and its tributaries; elsewhere, fairly common locally throughout the state.
Breeding Habitat. Marginal zones of woodlands and brushland, including wooded areas of high moraines, buttes, river bluffs, stream valleys, and lake margins, and brushy thickets on the prairie; also including partially wooded residential areas of towns and farmsteads, and shelterbelts.
Nesting. Breeding season: Late June to mid-September; peak, early July to early September. Adults were observed carrying nesting material in Pierce County during late June, 1966 (V. Erickson). Extreme egg dates (5 nests): July 2 [1901] in Nelson County (Bishop egg collection catalog, Peabody Museum) to August 15 [1915-5 fresh eggs] in Morton County (H. H. Sheldon). Dependent flying young were recorded on August 26 [1972] in Stutsman County (P. F. Springer).
Nests were situated in small trees and tall shrubs including such species as American elm, green ash, and bullberry. Two nests were situated 4 feet and 7 feet above the ground, respectively.
Indicated clutch size (5 nests): 4 to 6 eggs; mean, 4.8 eggs.
