Breeding Birds of North Dakota

Bullock's oriole (Icterus galbula bullockii (Swainson))

Breeding Range. (Fig. 155). Fairly common in the valleys along the Little Missouri River and its tributaries in Slope County and northwestern Bowman County; uncommon and local along the portion of the Little Missouri River valley that extends downstream through Billings County; rare and local elsewhere along the Missouri River and tributaries--recent records near Fort Rice in Morton County and along the Heart River in Stark County, Knife River in Mercer County, and Yellowstone River in McKenzie County. According to Hoffman (1877), the Bullock's Oriole was of regular occurrence during the breeding season along the Missouri River between the Grand River agency in South Dakota and Fort Rice.

Breeding Habitat. Stands of cottonwood that are situated on river floodplains.

Nesting. Three active nests (one being constructed) were recorded on May 21 [1972] in Billings County within Theodore Roosevelt National Park (P. F. Springer). Robert T. and Ann M. Gammell observed Bullock's Orioles feeding young at Medora in Billings County prior to 1957 and again about 1966.
