Breeding Range. (Fig. 147). Common in the Turtle Mountains, in the Agassiz Lake Plain Region, on the Northeastern, Southern, and Northwestern Drift Plains, and along the Missouri River Valley below Garrison Dam; fairly common elsewhere on the Coteau Slope, on the Missouri Coteau and Missouri Slope, and in the northeastern portion of the Little Missouri Slope (within Dunn and McKenzie Counties); uncommon in the more southern portion of the Little Missouri Slope (within Billings, Golden Valley, Slope, and Bowman Counties).
Breeding Habitat. Ungrazed and lightly grazed mixed-grass prairie; tall-grass prairie; wet-meadow zones of wetlands; domestic haylands (including alfalfa and various domestic grasses); retired cropland (including fields of smooth brome, intermediate wheatgrass, tall wheatgrass, crested wheatgrass, and sweetclover); and occasionally in croplands with well-developed vegetative growth of small grains (including wheat, barley, rye, oats, and flax).
Nesting. Breeding season: Late May to mid-August; peak, early June to mid-July. Extreme egg dates (5 nests): June 4 [1929] in Bottineau County (Davy 1930b) to June 27 [1962] in Ransom County (RES). A nest with four young, less than one-quarter grown was found on June 17 [1964] in Stutsman County (RES). Extreme dates of dependent young out of the nest (6 records): July 8 [1967] in LaMoure County to August 16 [1960] in Stutsman County (RES).
Indicated clutch size (4 nests): 4 to 5 eggs; mean, 4.8 eggs.
