Breeding Range. (Fig 106). Definite records of nests or dependent young are lacking. However, there is little doubt that this species does breed regularly in the wooded bottomland along the Little Missouri River and in the wooded residential area of Marmarth. During late spring and summer, it is common in the vicinity of Marmarth in Slope County, and occasional pairs occur along the stretch of the Little Missouri River that extends downstream as far as the Lost Bridge area (about 15 miles north of Killdeer). This species also was recorded at Bismarck on July 21, 1918 (Gabrielson and Jewett 1924) and at Bowman in Bowman County during the summer of 1968 (R. L. Kroodsma). Seasonal records of occurrence extend from June 7 [1964] in Slope County (RES) to August 7 [1918] in Dunn County (Gabrielson and Jewett 1924).
Breeding Habitat. During the summer months, Western Wood Pewees are largely restricted to stands or groves of mature cottonwood, usually with partially open canopy, that occur on the floodplain of the Little Missouri River or within the town limits of Marmarth.
