Breeding Birds of North Dakota

Eastern phoebe (Sayornis phoebe (Latham))

Breeding Range. (Fig. 101). Fairly common in the Turtle Mountains, and along the Sheyenne River valley in Cass, Richland, Ransom, Barnes, and Griggs Counties; fairly common locally along other wooded valleys in the Agassiz Lake Plain Region; uncommon and local in Sargent County (in the vicinity of streams and lakes), along the James River between Jamestown and LaMoure, in the vicinity of Devils Lake, and along the Mouse River in McHenry, Ward, and Renville Counties; casual occurrence elsewhere--recorded at Bowman in Bowman County, near Regent in Hettinger County, near Bismarck in Burleigh County, and at Cleveland in Stutsman County.

Breeding Habitat. Largely restricted to streams and lakes that are bordered by woodlands; usually in the vicinity of bridges or abandoned farm houses and sheds.

Nesting. Probable breeding season: Early May to mid-July. Nest-building was reported as early as May 7 [1970] in Stutsman County (P. F. Springer). A nest with five eggs was observed on June 7 [1967] in the Turtle Mountains of Bottineau County (RES). On June 21 [1915], a nest with three eggs was found under an overhanging bank of the Turtle River near Manvel in Grand Forks County; it was situated in the exposed roots of a tree (R. Kellogg).

Along streams, nests were nearly all situated on supporting structures of bridges, while near lakes, most nests were placed under eaves of abandoned sheds and houses or on ledges within these buildings.
