Breeding Birds of North Dakota

Ruby-throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris (Linnaeus))

Breeding Range. (Fig. 89). Fairly common in the Turtle Mountains; uncommon in the Pembina Hills and in the vicinity of Devils Lake (wooded lake shores and hills); uncommon and local in the Agassiz Lake Plain Region (largely restricted to wooded valleys along the Red River and its tributaries) and along the Sheyenne River valley (within Barnes and Griggs Counties); rare and local elsewhere--recorded at Jamestown, and along the Mouse River in McHenry County. This species also was reported as breeding rarely in northwestern North Dakota in an area that encompasses Burke, Renville, and Ward Counties (Gammell and Gammell 1962).

Breeding Habitat. Brushy margins or openings of tracts of deciduous forest including river floodplain and upland forests. At Fargo, O. A. Stevens reported that the spotted touch-me-not is a preferred summer flower for this species, and he believed the hummingbird nesting ground was closely associated with it (Bent 1940).

Nesting. On June 28, 1917 at Wahpeton in Richland County, a female was observed building a nest that was situated in an American elm, about 20 feet up; this nest contained one egg on July 1 and two eggs on July 3 (Jensen 1918). Another nest with two eggs was found at Wahpeton in 1914 (R. Kellogg). On June 28, 1972, Robert N. Randall found an active nest on Graham's Island in Benson County. Ed Bry found a nest near Fordville in Walsh County (date ?), and Anderson (1969) reports observing two young birds near their nest at Fargo (date ?).
