Breeding Range. (Fig. 96). Fairly common in the southern portion of the Little Missouri Slope (within Bowman, Slope, Golden Valley, and Billings Counties): uncommon in the northern portion of the Little Missouri Slope (within Dunn and McKenzie Counties); uncommon locally on the Coteau Slope and Missouri Slope (most numerous along the valleys of the Little Knife, White Earth, and Yellowstone rivers, and along the portion of the Missouri River valley that extends upstream from the mouth of the Little Missouri River); rare on the Northwestern Drift Plain; casual on the Northeastern Drift Plain and on the Southern Drift Plain (records from Barnes and Ramsey Counties).
Breeding Habitat. Habitats occupied by this form and the Yellow-shafted Flicker correspond very closely.
Nesting. Extreme active nest dates (5 records): May 24 [1967] in Golden Valley County (RES) to July 3 [1970] in Billings County (H. A. Kantrud). One nest containing young was recorded on June 7 [1964] in Slope County (RES), and another nest with seven young was recorded on June 29 [1843] in Williams County (Audubon 1897). The nest found in Billings County was situated in a dead box elder, and the opening was 10 feet above the ground. Dependent young out of the nest were observed on July 1 [1843] in Williams County (Audubon 1897).
