Breeding Birds of North Dakota

Belted kingfisher (Ceryle alcyon (Linnaeus))

Breeding Range. (Fig. 90). Fairly common in the Turtle Mountains; uncommon along the Red River and its larger tributaries (including the Wild Rice, Sheyenne, Maple, Goose, Turtle, Forest, Park, and Pembina rivers), along the Bois de Sioux River, in the vicinity of Devils Lake, along the James River and Pipestem Creek, along the Mouse and Des Lacs rivers, and along the Missouri River and its larger tributaries (including Beaver Creek, and the Cannonball, Heart, Knife, Little Missouri and Yellowstone rivers); rare elsewhere in the vicinity of permanent lakes and stream impoundments.

Breeding Habitat. Largely restricted to permanent streams and lakes that contain fish populations.

Nesting. Numerous nests have been reported by various observers, without details concerning dates or nesting sites. Apparently, the breeding season extends from mid-April to late July. Nests are situated at the end of tunnels that are dug in steep banks that border treams, lakes, or gravel pits.
