Screech owl (Otus asio (Linnaeus))


Breeding Range. (Fig. 81). Uncommon and local in the Agassiz Lake Plain Region, in the Turtle Mountains, and on the Northeastern Drift Plain, Southern Drift Plain, and Northwestern Drift Plain; rare and local on the Missouri Coteau and in the Southwestern Slope Region. A total of 16 definite records of nests or young have been reported from Grand Forks, Cass, Richland, Barnes, LaMoure, Stutsman, Kidder, Burleigh, and Ward Counties.

Breeding Habitat. Characteristic of groves or semiopen stands of trees, and margins of extensive tracts of woodland.

Nesting. Probable breeding season: Mid-March to early July. Active nests were recorded as early as March 16 [1972] and March 18 [1973] in Stutsman County (RES) and as late as June 4 [1967] in Stutsman County (C. Cink). Extreme egg dates (5 nests): April 10 [1972] in Stutsman County (H. A. Doty) to June 1 [1965] in Stutsman County (C. Cink). Nestlings were recorded on May 10, 1972 (H. A. Doty), May 25, 1973 (C. B. Stewart), and on June 4, 1967 (C. Cink) in Stutsman County.

Nests were situated in tree cavities or in bird boxes with suitable-size entrances that were located in woods.

Indicated clutch size (3 nests): 5, 6, and 7 eggs.
