Breeding Birds of North Dakota

Broad-winged hawk (Buteo platypterus (Vieillot))

Breeding Range. (Fig. 40). Common in the Turtle Mountains; uncommon in the Pembina Hills and on the wooded deltaic sand area of western Pembina County; rare and local elsewhere in the eastern third of the state (recent records reported from wooded stream valleys, lake margins, and hills in Grand Forks, Benson, Barnes, Stutsman, Ransom, Richland and LaMoure Counties). In addition, an adult exhibiting territorial behavior was closely observed on May 24, 1970 along the wooded floodplain of the Yellowstone River in McKenzie County (P. F. Springer, RES).

A report by Williams (1926) indicates that this species formerly was much more common as a summer resident in the vicinity of Grafton in Walsh County.

Breeding Habitat. Characteristic of mature deciduous forest including brushy wood margins. These habitat conditions are generally restricted to slopes and ravines of high hills and escarpments, margins of permanent lakes, deltaic sand areas, and floodplains of major streams.

Nesting. On June 5, 1938, Seth H. Low found an active nest in the Turtle Mountains. During 1967-1969, 15 active nests were found in the Turtle Mountains by Calvin Cink. On May 17, 1974, two active nests were found in the Turtle Mountains within Rolette County; one nest was situated in a quaking aspen about 30 feet above the ground, and the other nest was situated in a small tree (A. Moore).
