Cooper's hawk (Accipiter cooperii (Bonaparte))

Breeding Range. (Fig. 39). Fairly common in the Pembina Hills and Turtle Mountains, along the wooded valley of the Sheyenne River (extending upstream from Richland County to Eddy County), along the wooded valley of the James River (between Jamestown and Grand Rapids), along the wooded valley of the Mouse River (within McHenry and Ward Counties), and along the wooded valley of the Missouri River that extends downstream from Garrison Dam to a point about 10 miles below Bismarck; uncommon along other wooded stream valleys on the Agassiz Lake Plain, along the wooded valley of the Little Missouri River, and in wooded hills in vicinity of Devils Lake; rare elsewhere in the state.

Breeding Habitat. Extensive tracts of brushy, deciduous woodland and adjoining wood margins that occur on floodplains of major streams, and on slopes or in ravines of hills and escarpments. Occasionally, isolated tree claims and other stands of mature trees are occupied.

Nesting. Nest-building was recorded on April 16 [1964] at Bismarck (B. J. Rose) and on May 1 [1961] at Jamestown (RES). Extreme egg dates (5 nests): May 5 [1963] to May 28 [1961] in Stutsman County (RES). A nest with four young was recorded on June 29 [1915] at Larimore in Grand Forks County (R. Kellogg). On August 22 [1960], two recently fledged young that were calling frequently were observed in Stutsman County (RES).

Of seven reported nests, four were situated in American elm trees, one in a bur oak, one in a green ash, and one in a basswood. The height above ground of six nests ranged from 18 to 45 feet, and averaged 31 feet.

Indicated clutch size (3 nests): 4 to 5 eggs; mean, 4.3 eggs.
