Breeding Birds of North Dakota

Green heron (Butorides virescens) (Linnaeus)

Breeding Range. (Fig. 15). A pair with dependent young was observed at Jamestown on August 25, 1969, by John T. Lokemoen. This definite breeding record as well as several records of adults during the breeding season indicate that this rare species breeds at least occasionally along the James River in Stutsman County and along the Bois de Sioux, Red, Sheyenne, and Wild Rice Rivers in the southeastern corner of the state (Richland County, northeastern Ransom County, and southeastern Sargent County). Other summer records suggest that it possibly occurs also as a casual breeder in the northeastern and north-central portions of the state.

Breeding Habitat. All records of this species were obtained in or near woodland borders of streams, oxbows, ponds and lakes.

Nesting. The probable breeding season extends from early May to late August. The earliest record of occurrence was reported on May 2 [1905] at Glasston in Pembina County (Williams 1926).
