American green-winged teal (Anas crecca carolinensis (Gmelin))


Breeding Range. (Fig. 21). Uncommon throughout the Prairie Pothole Region and in the Turtle Mountains; rare in the Agassiz Lake Plain Region and Southwestern Slope Region.

Breeding Habitat. Complexes that contain a variety of wetlands, ranging in salinity from fresh to brackish. These include temporary, seasonal, and semipermanent ponds and lakes and shallow river impoundments that are managed for waterfowl use.

Nesting. Breeding season: Early May to early September; peak, mid-May to mid-August. Extreme egg dates (36 nests): May 7 [1969] to July 28 [1966] in Stutsman County (L. M. Kirsch). Of all nests with eggs that were recorded, 36 percent were found in May, 49 percent in June, and 15 percent in July. Extreme dates of dependent young (49 broods): June 20 [1898] in Rolette County (Job 1899) to September 1 [1967] in Ramsey County (P. A. Aus). American Green-winged Teal nests were found in a considerable variety of habitats. The great majority were found in native prairie (including thickets of low shrubs), retired cropland, hayfields, weedy field borders, and other similar situations.

Indicated clutch size (25 nests): 4 to 11 eggs; mean, 8.6 eggs.
