   	Fort Union [Williams County] in 1843.
   Audubon (1897) - Birds collected or observed by the
   	Audubon expedition from June 4 to September 2, 1843
   	along the Missouri River, particularly in the Fort Union
   	area.
   Baird et al. (1858) - Bell's Vireo collected by
   	J. J. Audubon at Fort Union during the summer of 1843.
   Burroughs (1961) - Breeding birds recorded by the Lewis
   	and Clark expedition along the Missouri River in 1804
   	and 1805; these include records of the Canada Goose and
 	Bald Eagle.
   Cooper (1859) - In 1853, young Bald Eagles at Lake Jessie
   	in Griggs County; Sharp-tailed Grouse abundant near
   	Fort Union; and Common Ravens near the great bend of
   	the Missouri.
   Coues (1874a) - Birds observed in 1873 along the northern
   	border of the state from Pembina west to the Mouse
   	River loop area.
   Coues (1897) - A few records of breeding birds observed
   	by Alexander Henry in the vicinity of Pembina from 1800
   	to 1803.
   Culbertson (1850) - Young Sandhill Cranes captured on
   	June 13, 1850 along the Missouri River below Fort
   	Berthold.
   Hoffman (1877) - In 1873, young Canada Geese and
   	breeding-season records of Sprague's Pipits along
   	headwaters of Oak Creek [in Sioux County]; and regular
   	occurence of Bullock's Oriole during the breeding season
   	along the Missouri River between the Grand River agency
   	in South Dakota and Fort Rice in Morton County.
   Keating (1824) - Breeding-season records of birds at
   	Pembina in 1823 including the Turkey Vulture, Passenger
   	Pigeon, Whip-poor-will, and Common Raven.
   Maximilian (1843) - Breeding birds observed along the
   	Missouri River in 1833 including the Trumpeter Swan,
   	Canada Goose, Turkey Vulture, Long-billed Curlew,
   	Passenger Pigeon, and Common Raven.
   McDermott (1951) - Birds observed by the Audubon
   	expedition during late June and July 1843 along the
   	Missouri River and particularly in the Fort Union area;
   	includes observations of the Canada Goose, American
   	Kestrel, and Long-billed Curlew.
   Reid and Gannon (1927) - Breeding birds recorded along
   	the Missouri River by the Lewis and Clark expedition in
   	1805; includes records of the Bald Eagle and Long-billed
   	Curlew.
   Reid and Gannon (1928) - Breeding birds recorded by
   	Alexander Henry in the vicinity of Pembina during 1800
   	to 1804; includes records of Trumpeter Swan, Canada
   	Goose, and Passenger Pigeon.
   Street (1948) - Breeding-season specimens of birds
   	collected in 1843 by the Audubon expedition along the
   	Missouri River, chiefly at Fort Union.
   Suckley (1859) - Long-billed Curlews breeding commonly
   	throughout the prairies of North Dakota during June and
   	July 1853.
   White (1959) - A few records of birds at Pembina on
   	August 7, 1861, including observations of Passenger
   	Pigeons.
   White (1966) - Breeding-season bird records in 1862 and
   	1863 including Canada Geese along the Maple River in
   	Cass County, Sandhill Cranes on Lake Jessie in Griggs
   	County, and Whooping Cranes in Ward County.
   	1880-1919
   Abbott (1902) - Nesting of Western Grebes and Eared
   	Grebes in a large mixed colony in the Devils Lake region
   	in 1901; also notes on the nesting of a few pairs of Red-
   	necked Grebes.
   Abbott (1916) - Some of the characteristic breeding birds
   	in the Benson-Pierce County area.
   Abbott (1919) -  Habits and behavior of the Marbled
   	Godwit in the "Choctaw Basin" area of southwestern
   	Benson County.
   Anonymous (1884) - Large numbers of White Pelican eggs
   	taken at Devils Lake in 1883.
   Bailey (1913) - Nest and family of Long-eared Owls at
   	Stump Lake [Nelson County].
   Bailey (1915a) - Characteristic breeding birds on the
   	prairie grasslands in the vicinity of Stump Lake, in the
   	area between Stump Lake and Devils Lake, and in the
   	area between Devils Lake and Red Willow Lake [in
   	Griggs County] including a portion of the Sheyenne River
   	valley.
   Bailey (1915b) - Breeding birds inhabiting shrub thickets
   	and woodland habitats in the vicinity of Stump Lake.
   Bailey (1915c) - Nest and family of Marsh Hawks at
   	Stump Lake.
   Bailey (1916a) - Breeding birds inhabiting sloughs and
   	marshes in the Stump Lake area and at Lake Elsie near
   	Hankinson in Richland County.
   Bailey (1916b) - Breeding water birds inhabiting Stump,
   	Devils and Sweetwater Lakes.
   Bailey (1918a) - Breeding birds inhabiting the lakes and

   Barnes (1898) - Several nests of the Eastern Kingbird in
   	Traill and Steele Counties during 1895 were situated in
   	small bushes within one foot of the ground.
   Bendire (1892) - Nesting of the Swainson's Hawk,
   	Ferruginous Hawk, and Merlin in North Dakota.
   Bent (19Ola, 1902) - Breeding waterfowl in the Devils
   	Lake area, along the Sheyenne River, and in Nelson and
   	Steele Counties in 1901.
   Bent (19Olb and 1907) - Nest of the Ferruginous Hawk in
   	Nelson County; first mistakenly identified as belonging
   	to the Rough-legged Hawk (Bent, 1901b); another nest of
   	the Ferruginous Hawk with young also reported from
   	Lake Washington in Eddy County.
   Bent (1903) - Breeding birds of a large slough in Steele
   	County on June 10, 1901.
   Bishop (1896) - Nesting of the Common Nighthawk and
   	Song Sparrow in Towner and Rolette Counties in 1895.
   Bishop (1904) - Nesting of the Red-winged Blackbird in
   	the Devils Lake area, in the Turtle Mountains, and in
   	Towner County; also nesting of the Sharp-tailed Sparrow
   	during 1901-1902 in Ramsey County.
   Bishop (1921) - Breeding of the Common Loon in the
   	Turtle Mountains from 1902 to 1905; also young loons
   	on Devils Lake in 1895 and adults on Stump Lake during
   	June in 1903 and 1905.
   Bishop (1935) - Breeding birds of undisturbed prairie and
   	sloughs in northern Towner County in 1895.
   Bowdish (1909) - Young Canada Geese on Stump Lake in
   	1908.
   Bowman (1904a) - Nest and eggs of the Sharp-tailed
   	Sparrow near town of Devils Lake in 1902.
   Bowman (1904b) - Nesting habits of the Black Tern in
   	North Dakota.
   Bryant (1894) - Egg-collecting trip during the spring of
   	1892 in the vicinity of Devils Lake; includes records of
   	two nests of the Common Goldeneye on Graham Island.
   Bryant (1895a) - Nests of the Canada Goose, Bald Eagle,
   	and Ferruginous Hawk in the vicinity of Sweetwater Lake
   	and Devils Lake in 1895.
   Bryant (1895b) - Collection of eggs along the shore of
   	Devils Lake in 1895, including 16 sets of eggs of the
   	Common Goldeneye, 5 sets of Swainson's Hawk, and 2
   	sets of Ferruginous Hawk.
   Bryant (1899) - Behavior and nesting habits of the White-
   	winged Scoter on Teller's Bay [6-mile Bay] of Devils
   	Lake, apparently during spring of 1895; a total of 28
   	nests were found.
   Cooke (1885) - Early invasion of the Greater Prairie
   	Chicken into eastern North Dakota during the 1880's.
   Cooke (1915) - Colonies of Ring-billed Gulls at Stump
   	Lake in 1893, and at Devils Lake in 1898.
   Coon (1899) - Nest of the Common Goldeneye at Devils
   	Lake in 1895.
   Currie (1892) - Habits, behavior, and habitat of nesting
   	Chestnut-collared Longspurs on the North Dakota
   	prairie; also reports that this species was associated with
   	McCown's Longspur in Ramsey County.
   Davie (1898) - Nesting of the Western Grebe at Devils
   	Lake.
   Dutcher (1906) - Nesting of several species on Stump
   	Lake, including the Canada Goose and California Gull.
   Freeman (1919) - Incomplete list of birds in the Fargo
   	area, with notations on summer residence status.
   Goss (1883) - Nesting of the Eared Grebe and Pied-billed
   	Grebe in North Dakota.
   Hibbard (1956a) - Nest and young of the Whooping Crane
   	near Adams in Walsh County in 1909.
   Hoffman (1883) - Nests of Chimney Swifts and Cliff
   	Swallows near Fort Berthold [in Mclean County] in 1881;
   	Burrowing Owls reported to be common in area.
   Jacobs (1898) - Detailed nest records of the Double-
   	crested Cormorant, Black-crowned Night Heron,
   	Gadwall, Shoveler, Marsh Hawk, Franklin's Gull, and
   	Long-eared Owl in Benson or Ramsey Counties during
   	1896-1897.
   Job (1898) - Breeding birds on islands of Stump Lake in
   	1 898.
   Job (1899) - Nesting of waterfowl in the northeastern
   	quarter of the state including the Devils Lake area and
   	Turtle Mountains.
   Job (1902) - Breeding water birds during 1898-1901 in the
   	Stump Lake - Devils Lake area, in the lake region north
   	and northeast of Devils Lake, and in the Turtle
   	Mountains.
   Judd (1892) - Great abundance of the Greater Prairie
   	Chicken and Sharp-tailed Grouse in the vicinity of Cando
   	and in the Mouse River area 60 miles to the west.
   Judd (1893) - Nests of the Western Kingbird in Towner
   	County and successful breeding of Canada Geese in
   	captivity during 1891 and 1892 in Towner County.
   Knight (1908) - Nests of the Canada Goose, various
   	species of ducks, Ring-billed Gull, and Short-eared Owl
   	in the general region of Devils and Stump Lakes during
   	1 893-1901.
   Maltby (1915a) - Unusual sets of runt eggs of the
   	Bobolink and Red-winged Blackbird in Benson County in
   	1914.
   Maliby (1915b) - Nesting of the Yellow Rail it
   	southwestern Benson County during 1899-1914 (notes m
   	12 nests); breeding population also reported at Pleasan
   	Lake in northwestern Benson County.
   Oberholser (1918a) - Philadelphia Vireo in song a
	Carpenter Lake in the Turtle Mountains on July 8, 1917
   Oberholser (1918b) - Pair of Cinnamon Teal near Cherry
   	Lake in Kidder County on June 15, 1918.
   Oberholser (1919) - Breeding-season specimens of the
   	Black-headed Grosbeak from Fort Buford, Cannonball,
   	Fort Totten, Fort Union, and Fort Rice.
   Peabody (1905) - Breeding Yellow Rails in the Big Coulee
   	area of southwestern Benson County; also summer
   	occurrence of the Black Rail in this area.
   Peabody (1920) - Breeding birds in the vicinity of Big
   	Coulee in southwestern Benson County.
   Peabody (1922) - Breeding Yellow Rails in the Big Coulee
   	area of southwestern Benson County during the early
   	1900's; also description of the environs of the Pleasant
   	Lake breeding area in northwestern Benson County.
   Peabody (1925) - Nesting of the Yellow Rail in the Big
   	Coulee area of southwestern Benson County during the
   	early 1900's.
   Reed (1904) -Nesting of several species in North Dakota
   	including the Western Grebe, Double-crested Cormorant,
   	Canada Goose, and Peregrine Falcon.
   Roberts (1932) - Breeding of a few species in North
   	Dakota during 1882-1893 including the Swainson's
   	Hawk, Merlin, Whooping Crane, Willet, and Chestnut-
   	collared Longspur.
   Rolfe (1895) - Nesting of the Wilson's Phalarope in the
   	Devils Lake region.
   Rolfe (1896a) - Reduction in numbers of several breeding
   	species in the Devils Lake area during 1885-1896
   	including the White Pelican, Canada Goose, Franklin's
   	Gull, and Common Tern.
   Rolfe (1896b) - Nesting of the Ferruginous Hawk in
   	Benson County including notes on numerous nests.
   Rolfe (1896c) - Three nests of the Baird's Sparrow in the
   	vicinity of Minnewaukan and Fort Totten Indian
   	Reservation in 1895 and 1896.
   Rolfe (1897a) - Behavior and habits of breeding Marsh
   	Hawks and Short-eared Owls in the Devils Lake region.
   Rolfe (1897b) - Nesting of the Upland Plover, Great
   	Horned Owl, Willow Flycatcher, Common Yellowthroat,
   	and Clay-colored Sparrow in the vicinity of Minne-
   	waukan and near the shore of Devils Lake.
   Rolfe (1897c) - Nesting of ducks in the Devils Lake
   	region.
   Rolfe (1898a) - Nesting of several species in the Devils
   	Lake region, including the Double-crested Cormorant,
   	American Bittern, Canada Goose, Mallard, Pintail,
   	Canvasback, Ferruginous Hawk, Marsh Hawk, Sharp-
   	tailed Grouse, Sandhill Crane, Virginia Rail, Sora, and
   	apparently the California Gull [identification as Herring
   	Gull probably a mistake].
   Rolfe (1898b) - Unusual nesting sites of several species in
   	the Devils Lake region including the Chimney Swift,
   	Eastern Kingbird, and Bank Swallow.
   Rolfe (1899a) - Nest and eggs of the Sharp-tailed Sparrow
   	in the Devils Lake area in 1899.
   Rolfe (1899b) - Nests of several species in the Devils Lake
   	region including the Gadwall, American Green-winged
   	Teal, Northern Shoveler, American Wigeon, Swainson's
   	Hawk, Piping Plover, Upland Plover, American Avocet,
   	Wilson's Phalarope, Common Tern, and Loggerhead
   	Shrike; also nests of the Canada Goose and Sandhill
   	Crane in an area about 50 miles west of Minnewaukan.
   Rolfe (19OOa) - Nests of several species of shorebirds in
   	the Devils Lake region including the Piping Plover,
   	Killdeer, Spotted Sandpiper, Marbled Godwit, American
   	Avocet, and Wilson's Phalarope.
   Rolfe (19OOb) - Nests of the Canada Goose and Sandhill
   	Crane in 1899 in an area about 50 miles west of
   	Minnewaukan; also record of young Willets in the
   	vicinity of Minnewaukan.
   Roosevelt (1885) - Several breeding species in the vicinity
   	of Roosevelt's Elkhorn Ranch [in Billings County]
   	including the Mountain Plover, Long-billed Curlew, and
   	Upland Plover.
   Simpson (1912) - Nesting colony of Double-crested
   	Cormorant on Devils Lake.
   Strutz (1969) - Propagation of the Giant Canada Goose
   	from eggs taken in Kidder County in 1893.
   Taxi (1892) - Large flocks of Passenger Pigeons at
   	Larimore in Grand Forks County on April 22, 1891 and
   	March 26, 1892.
1920-1949
   Aldous (1943) - Habits, populations, and habitat of the
   	Sharp-tailed Grouse in the sand dune area of McHenry,
   	Pierce, and Bottineau Counties during the period August
   	1937 to the spring of 1939.
   Anonymous [Gammell, R. T. and A. M. Gammell] (1948)
   	- List of birds in the vicinity of Des Lacs National
   	Wildlife Refuge [in Burke and Ward Counties] from 1935
   	to 1948 with notations on breeding status.
   Behle (1950) - Breeding specimens of the Common
   	Yellowthroat from the following locations: Medora, Fort
   	Buford, Towner, Walhalla, Larimore, Bismarck, Glen
   	Ullin, Fort Rice, Wahpeton, Fairmount, Valley City,
   	Tokio, Fish Lake (Turtle Mts.), and Fort Clark.
   Bennett (1926) - Nesting of White Pelicans in the Chase
   	Lake colony as noted on June 24, 1924 (includes several
   	photographs); also other breeding species in this area
   	including the California Gull, Ring-billed Gull, and
   	American Avocet; and a family of Canada Geese in 1916.
   Brenckle (1936) - Breeding-season banding records of the
   	Burrowing Owl at Jamestown and at McVille.
   Cartwright et al. (1937) - Localities in North Dakota from
   	which breeding specimens of Baird's Sparrow have been
   	collected; includes nine records of nests with eggs.
   Cook (1946) - Summer records of the White-winged
   	Scoter during 1936-1941 on the Des Lacs, Lostwood, and
   	Upper Souris National Wildlife Refuges; also two broods
  	 of young on Poison Lake in McHenry County in 1936.
   Cooke (1937) - Breeding-season banding records of the
   	Yellow-shafted Flicker at Fairdale, Fairmount, and
   	Wilton, and of the Eastern Kingbird at Jamestown and
   	Harvey.
   Cooke (1941) - Breeding-season banding records of the
   	Red-tailed Hawk at Fairdale and Park River; of the
   	Swainson's Hawks at New England and Langdon; of the
   	Marsh Hawk at Park River, Upham, and Portal; of the

   Davy (1930a) - Nesting of the Ferruginous Hawk in the
   	Mouse River Loop area, chiefly in the vicinity of Antler,
   	during 1927-1929; includes descriptions of 18 nests.
   Davy (1930b) - Bobolink's nest with eggs near Antler in
  	 1929.
   Fox (1938) - Nesting of the Marsh Hawk at Park River
   	and Mandan and nesting of the Greater Prairie Chicken
   	at Park River.
   Fox (1939) - Nest of the Red-tailed Hawk; also

   Hammond (1941a) - Predation by Common Crows on
   	waterfowl nests at the J. Clark Salyer National Wildlife
   	Refuge.
   Hammond (1941b) - Brood size of the Gray Partridge on

   Hammond and Henry (1949) - Nesting of Marsh Hawks
