Dasychira vagans [Lymantriidae]
Dense covering of white, grey, and black hairs of varying lengths, including thick tufts of grey hairs in A1-A4; a pair of long tufts of black hairs project forward laterally from A1 and backward laterally from A8; also a single tuft of long black hairs projects backward dorsally from A8; clusters of short white clubbed hairs occur dorsally and laterally; red middorsal glands on A6 and A7; a row of paired long, black, clubbed hairs point laterally. This species is very common on many species of broadleaf trees, in particular white oak, willow, and black cottonwood during May and June. This caterpillar is similar in appearance to Dasychira grisefacta but differs in having row of paired long, black, clubbed hairs that point laterally.
