Northern Prairie Donates Funds to Salvation Army
Article taken from The Jamestown Sun, January, 1999The Jamestown Salvation Army was selected as beneficiary of the 1998 Northern Prairie Christmas party. Annually since 1993, the center has held a silent auction during the party, and donated the proceeds to a worthy cause within the community.
This year $130 was donated to the Salvation Army to help offset the approximate $17,000 short-fall that the organization experienced in it local Christmas kettle fund raiser. While accepting the check, Maj. Ralph Ashcraft noted that most of the funds raised by the Jamestown Salvation Army are used for local programs.
Cliff Calheim, who chaired the center's party committee said, "The auction allows employees to clean all sorts of white elephants out of their closets and replace them with all kinds of new white elephants, some of which they didn't even know they had bid on...knowing that the money goes to a good cause just makes it more fun."
Previous recipients have included Jamestown Hospice, the Humane Society, the Senior Citizen's Center and two individuals with large medical expenses during the Christmas season.
