Research Center Raises Funds for Senior Center
Article taken from The Jamestown Sun, Wednesday, January 28, 1998The James River Senior Center was the recipient of $400 raised among the employees of the Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center during the Center's annual silent auction. For the last several years, proceeds of the auction, which is held in conjunction with the Research Center's Christmas party, have been donated to a worthy cause in Jamestown . Other recent recipients have been the Jamestown Hospital Hospice Program, the James River Humane Society, and two individuals faced with high medical bills.
Auction Chairman Dave Mushet said the decision to donate the money to the Senior Citizen's Center was "...a natural, considering their financial crisis and the importance of the work that they do. Knowing that the money is going to such a worthy cause seems to make the staff more willing to bid higher on items of questionable value, and adds to the fun. It's all part of the Christmas spirit."
Mushet presented the check to the Senior Center on January 20. Site Manager Deb Greshik commented "We are so appreciative of community support; without it, our doors would have to close. Thanks to that support, we are making headway." She said funds raised to date are $81,000 against the center's $100,000 debts. However, she added that Aging Services cut $27,000 from the center's contract, so now it will have to make that up as well.
